A valve spring is a crucial component in various mechanical systems, primarily responsible for closing a valve after it has been opened. Its function is to exert a constant or controlled force that pushes the valve back to its closed position, ensuring proper sealing and operation of the system.

Due to the demanding conditions (high temperatures, rapid cycling, high stresses), valve springs are made from specialized high-strength spring steels. Common materials include:

• Carbon Steel: Standard grades like music wire (high carbon steel) are often used for general-purpose springs.
• Chrome Silicon (Cr-Si) Steel: A popular choice for high-performance applications due to its excellent tensile strength, fatigue resistance, and ability to withstand high temperatures. Often heat-treated and shot-peened for enhanced durability.
• Chrome Vanadium (Cr-V) Steel: Another high-strength alloy steel with good fatigue properties, though increasingly being replaced by Cr-Si in some applications.
• Stainless Steel Alloys: Used in applications where corrosion resistance is critical, such as in marine or certain industrial environments.
• Specialty Alloys: For extreme conditions, materials like Inconel or Nimonic alloys might be used due to their superior high-temperature strength.
